Nagenahira Nagas vs Ruhuna Royals Preview – SLPL 2012

It’s the first match of the inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League season as Nagenahira Nagas and the Ruhuna Royals have the opportunity to start the season off. Teams will be looking for early points on the board as the tournament isn’t as long as the Indian Premier League. The teams are quite balance but with Lasith Malinga leading the Ruhuna Royals it will be tough for Nagenahira to attack him especially in Sri Lankan conditions.

Match Information :

August 11, Colombo
Starting Time: 1600 Local Time (1030 GMT Time)

Key Contest:

Lasith Malinga vs Ahmed Shehzad

Lasith Maling is one of the highest profiles in world cricket and his speciality is in the T20 format where he is incredibly hard to face. Playing in Sri Lanka will make it that bit tougher for batsman to get him away to the boundary. Since no teams have played yet it is uncertain who will open the batting for Nagenahira but a possibility is the Pakistan international Ahmed Shehzad who has had a slow start to his international career but has big things to come. Malinga and Shehzad have crossed paths before, the latest being in June where Shehzad struggled to get the Sri Lankan fast bowler away.

Team News:

Each team can have a maximum of 4 overseas players and has to have an under 21 Sri Lankan international.

Nagenahira Nagas should include Ahmed Shehzad, Mushfiqur Rahim, Travis Birt and as their four overseas players while the under 21 player could in fact be Gayan Maneshan.

Ruhuna have a strong squad with plenty of depth. Aaron Finch is a strong T20 player and should be in the First XI for this first match along with Richard Levi opening the batting. Ryan Harris is a strong bowler who has a knack of taking multiple wickets. The last overseas spot should go to the one and only Shahid Afridi who is one of the most talented all rounders at this current time.
